糖心vlog传媒Upgrading student Kyle Gus is finishing his high school credits as he prepares to start his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Marketing major, at 糖心vlog传媒in January.
糖心vlog传媒student Kyle Gus is on a path he wouldn鈥檛 have dreamed of 10 years ago 鈥 getting his degree in business from NIC.
It鈥檚 an achievement that that would not have been possible a few short years ago, but thanks to his perseverance and support from his 糖心vlog传媒instructors, he has been accepted into NIC鈥檚 Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing major program and is slated to begin studies in January 2021.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to believe that I鈥檝e made it,鈥 said Gus. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 have done it without the support and encouragement I got at NIC.鈥
Gus decided to make a change as he was working the latest of many service industry jobs he鈥檇 taken since dropping out of high school.
鈥淚 was just was really, really bored,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd I decided, 鈥業 don鈥檛 want to do this anymore.鈥欌
Gus mulled a career in trades or construction. Unsure of what to do, he consulted with friend, mentor and 糖心vlog传媒Aboriginal advisor Luke George, who suggested he start by earning his missing English and math credits to finish his high school diploma and then pursue a degree.
For Gus, it鈥檚 a moment he will never forget.
鈥淚t was pretty empowering to have someone tell you that you can do something when for the past 10 years it seemed impossible,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was like a light switched on but there was still a lot of uncertainty. Was it going to be worth it?鈥
Gus enrolled in upgrading courses, but the transition back to school wasn鈥檛 smooth. He was unable to complete the English course on time and failed his first math exam.
鈥淚 was prepared to drop math,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut my instructor said, 鈥楴ope, see you Monday.鈥欌
When he was unable to finish his English 11 equivalent, his new instructor allowed him to build on his previous work in the course for his second attempt.
鈥淓ach one of them had a big hand in my success,鈥 Gus said. 鈥淭hey did not let me fail. That was not an option.鈥
Gus has now earned his English 12 credit, as well as Math 11. He will finish his final math credit in January and earn his high school diploma as part of his first-year business courses at NIC.
It鈥檚 a far cry from the road he might have taken.
鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to get complacent, to not be happy with what you鈥檙e doing but to convince yourself this is all you can do,鈥 said Gus. 鈥淚t was hard to take that first step, but it鈥檚 worth it.鈥
Gus said encouragement from his mother Agnes and grandmother Margaret was also key to his success.
鈥淚 would be remiss if I didn't give credit to them,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he choice to go back to school would not have been so easy without their continued support.鈥
For other students, Gus鈥 advice is simple.
鈥淭here鈥檚 support for you at NIC. Sign up. Finish your courses. Don鈥檛 give up."
