Hawaii
January to February 2025
This Indigenous field school provided students with a cultural immersion experience focused on Indigenous education and culture. This field school was in partnership with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) and University of Hawai'i Maui College. Students learned about Indigenous cultures through activities at sites like the Paeloco farm and by experiencing Hawaiian hospitality and traditions.
The field school was developed in collaboration with Vancouver Island University’s education program and included 17 students — 15 Indigenous and two non-Indigenous students. They had a chance to see Indigenous language immersion, especially with young children. The group learned more about their hosts’ culture and looked at land-based work. The whole trip provided the chance for students to see what progress is being made in another Indigenous culture.
