Hospital unit clerks bring specialized office administration skills to hospitals, medical offices and health care facilities.

糖心vlog传媒graduate Casey Oxley is combining her office experience with a passion for helping people, thanks to NIC鈥檚 Hospital Unit Clerk program.

Oxley graduated from the one-year certificate in Campbell River in 2017 and is currently working in health care facilities in both Port Alberni and Parksville.

鈥淚鈥檇 looked a number of different health care programs,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 had office experience and this career path combined those two.鈥

Hospital unit clerks provide administrative support to medical units in hospitals and other health care facilities, including answering phones, making appointments and transcribing physicians鈥 orders.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an essential role in the health care team,鈥 said the program instructor Laura Hickey.

The program focuses on the communication and terminology used in health units and medical offices. The terminology training, in particular, is key to being successful in the workforce, said Oxley.

鈥淓ach unit or office does things differently, but learning the terminology lets you speak the language,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t lets you jump in, learn the processes of that office or unit and get to work.鈥

For Oxley, the work is challenging and rewarding. 鈥淚鈥檇 highly recommend it if you鈥檙e interested in health care and also want to do that kind of office administration role,鈥 she said.
