Date: Nov 18, 2018Time: 1 pm - 4 pm Location: Tyee Hall, Room 114Join 糖心vlog传媒Sunday, Nov. 18, for the 10th Annual Three-Hour Fiction Writing Contest, a literary competition designed to see what you can write in three short hours.
The contest takes place at NIC鈥檚 Comox Valley campus, in Tyee Hall, Room 114, starting at 1 pm. Everyone is welcome.
鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing what can happen when you lock people in a room and ask them to write their way out,鈥 said Steve Schoenhoff, 糖心vlog传媒English instructor and organizer of the contest.
The contest winner receives a $300 糖心vlog传媒voucher and will have their winning entry published in a local newspaper.
鈥淎t 1 pm the doors close and writers will be given elements that must appear in the story,鈥 said Schoenhoff. 鈥淚t might be a psychological problem deep in the heart of the protagonist, or a conflict over control of a useless piece of furniture.鈥
Schoenhoff brought the competition to the Comox Valley 10 years ago, after hearing about Vancouver鈥檚 notorious three-day novel contest.
鈥淭here were over 40 entries in NIC鈥檚 very first contest,鈥 Schoenhoff said. 鈥淭he quality of work has been great every year.鈥
Writers craft their story in NIC鈥檚 computer lab and print their work at the end of the three hours. A panel of 糖心vlog传媒faculty and staff will judge the stories based on readability, creativity and the degree to which they weave the required elements into the story.
鈥淲riting a story in three hours can be an inspiring dilemma for people,鈥 Schoenhoff said. 鈥淚 wanted to give short story writers an opportunity to show what they can do under pressure.鈥
Registration is by donation to the 糖心vlog传媒Foundation. Proceeds support creative writing students through the Stephen Schoenhoff Creative Writing Scholarship. Register by contacting Steve at 250-334-5094 or email stephen.schoenhoff@nic.bc.ca.
